The idea here is to expose others to music they’ve never heard of while expanding our own music library.
And it’s easy to play.
In the comment section, reply with your top 10 albums that never made it mainstream. Include a short description if you want. We’re flexible.
In no particular order:
1. Little Wings - Light Green Leaves . (Freak/Folk in this album that is Kerouac meets Dylan. Here you’ll find off-key vocals that grow on you along with great lyrics.)
2. Dave Douglas - Songs for Wandering Souls. ( Play this during cocktail hour. Amazing jazz that tickles.)
3. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs (Never has pain sounded better in this steam ship meets blues album with pop and jazz sensibilities.)
4. Chris Thile - All Who Wander Are Not Lost (Classical and Jazz are prominent undercurrents of this intricate bluegrass album - who knew downhome music could sound so polished?)
5. Great Jewish Music - Jacob do Bandolim (A host of artists take a spin at covering this Jewish Latin Jazz Master. The outcome is up-beat and makes you smile. This album makes for great driving music.)
6. Tim Berne - ScienceFriction (Beauty in Chaos, this composed avante-garde jazz album may take a few listens, but the composition keeps it on this side of crazy, while still being crazy. Look for the peace below the noise.)
7. Ani DiFranco - Living in Clip (Oh, Ani.)
8. Animal Liberation Orchestra - Fly Between Falls (What would happen if someone tried to recreate The Band, but update it to today? ALO.)
9. Brett Dennen - So Much More (I actually teared up when I heard some of these songs; man I’m a softie. Paul Simonesque)
10. Immortal Technique - Revolutionaries Volume 2 (Have you ever heard a rapper only rap about money when he’s talking about the creation of the Federal Reserve? Well, you should.)
